Online Nursing Program at Olivet Nazarene Transforms the 3Ps with Real Patient Video
Creating a Collaborative Environment
ReelDx's innovative medical video technology helps students learn how to diagnose and treat patients by observing real patient encounters via peer-reviewed video cases. At Olivet Nazarene University, the technology is used to provide students with a powerful online education.
Students first watch a video of a patient in a provider's office, in an emergency department, or in a community setting and are shown only the patient's vital signs, history and demographic information. From there, the students collaborate online to share their differential diagnosis and document their reasoning for each potential diagnosis. They each post their assessment to the Learning Management System for the rest of their team to see, then work together to outline a treatment plan. By leveraging information found in Olivet library resources, and tapping into a vast repository of patient information, students become more proficient at clinical reasoning and determining a plan of care.
Dr. Bruley notes that the instructors see an immediate difference in their student's performance using ReelDx. "The faculty are more engaged with the students. They can see exactly what materials the students are accessing to help make a diagnosis and can help guide the students if they are going down the wrong path."
In the past, a group of students would need to work together to determine a diagnosis, but using the online video library in ReelDx, students learn asynchronously, each working on their own to create a traditional SOAP (subjective, objective, assessment, and plan) note. They are given all of the supporting information they need to evaluate the patient including what labs and procedures have already been done. Documenting patient encounters in the medical record is an integral part of practice workflow and critical to continuity of care, so mastery of this skill is a fundamental element of their professional development.
Different Departments, Different Uses
Dr. Bruley was surprised to see how ReelDx is being used by different faculty in different courses. "I thought the pathophysiology and pharmacology instructors would use ReelDx the same way. What I found was that one educator decided to create a 'second-time visit' scenario using another real patient case as an illustration. It's really fascinating to see how many innovative and creative ways our educators can utilize ReelDx to teach our students."

Nursing Students More Actively Engaged, Improve Clinical Reasoning Using ReelDx
According to a 2018 Online Education Trends report from BestColleges.com, 73% of schools made a decision to offer online programs based on the growth potential for overall student enrollment. The study was based on interviews with 295 online program administrators and 1,500 students. Why has there been such growth in online education courses? Part of it is the flexibility that online learning offers students who can learn at their own pace and on their own schedule. For online college programs like the nursing program at Olivet Nazarene University there is another important reason.
"We want to offer online programs that keep the students actively engaged in learning," said Dr. Deborah Kuhn Bruley, Ph.D., RN, Director of the MSN Program and Associate Professor of Nursing at Olivet Nazarene University. "Providing innovative teaching methods, like online learning, are how we are going to train the next generation of nurses."
In order to accomplish this goal, Dr. Bruley sought new technology that was easy to use and would actively engage students. When she watched a demo of ReelDx, she was immediately impressed. "When I watched the training video I was just thrilled. We were all blown away by how powerful ReelDx is and we knew that we'd found the right tool for our training needs."
